Purpose To analyze clinical result of arthroscopic repair for horizontal tear of discoid meniscus. Materials and Methods We have analyzed 17 cases of 15 patients who were arthroscopically confirmed as horizontal tear of discoid meniscus and underwent vertical repair from March 1997 to July 2001. The average follow-up period was 27 months(12-72months) and the average age was 26 years(6-53years). All lesions were on lateral meniscus, and the cases associated with the ligamentous injury or ipsilateral meniscal injury were excluded. Lysholm score was used to evaluate clinical results and the subjective satisfaction of the patients was surveyed as well. Failure was defined as results showing lower Lysholm¡¯s score than before the operation, lower degree of satisfaction than 3 points, and symptoms of locking and giving way in follow-up. Results A degree of satisfaction of the patients averaged 4.7 points(5 point scale) at last follow-up, and Lysholm score was improved to 95 points at last follow-up from 79 points preoperatively. Lysholm¡¯s score was lower than before the operation in 2 cases and postoperative locking and giving way were observed in 2 cases. total 4 cases were defined as failure. Conclusion As a treatment of horizontal tear of discoid meniscus, arthroscopic meniscal repair can be alternative treatment option.
